In the heart of the northwest of Northern Ireland lies Derry / Londonderry. A charming city filled with unique history, diverse and fascinating culture and stunning scenery. While the destination may not be a priority on your list, it is a must visit that I just had to share with my blog. The city creates an experience that is both enlightening and simply unforgettable. Let’s find out more on why this city is a must visit.

Historical significance 

The fascinating fact that Derry is one of the oldest cities in Ireland, and its rich history dating back over 1,500 years ago it is sure to draw attention to history enthusiasts. The well-preserved 17^th century walls create a compelling time travelling atmosphere, taking you back to the siege of derry and the turbulent times of the troubles. 

Art scene and culture 

Derry is a hotspot for artistic freedom and creativity expression, highlighted across the array of festivals throughout the season. One of which, the Derry Halloween Festival, which may I add is one of the biggest in Europe! Transforms the city into a spooky hub of celebrations, kicking off with an elaborate and vibrant parade showcasing performers, musicians and dancers all in extensive costumes to reign the festive spirit. With family friendly activities available for all ages, it’s a no brainer as to why this is a favourite amongst the community. Children can have fun with interactive workshops, storytelling sessions and face painting whilst ensuring that families can partake in the fun together. 

Dining / Nightlife / Hospitality 

In recent years, the culinary scene blossomed, whether its small cafes, finer dining restaurants or Instagram worthy brunch spots, the options are endless. From ethnic cuisine to traditional Irish meals, this city is a hub for dining experiences that make you want more. The annual Derry Food Festival showcases what the region has to offer, bringing together local farmers and chefs to highlight local ingredients. Customers can sample street food stands and attend cooking demonstrations while children can partake in fun food themed games, which further embodies the aim to support the local economy. Visitors also compliment the sense of warm hospitality, from browsing the shops to enjoying a cozy pint in one of the many traditional Irish bars, they are filled with friendly locals. The city has gained international recognition, through the funny witted TV show ‘Derry Girls’, set against the backdrop of the 1990’s, the show captures day to day life for those growing up in the city during the infamous troubles. Visiting gives you the opportunity to step into the world that is ‘Derry Girls’ with many iconic backdrops scattered across the city and the well-known painted mural offers a landmark for all fans of the show.
